Bienvenidos!!
Welcome to Getting to the Roots of a Taco - the Search for our Moreno-Hernandez Family Roots!
I am Taco, AKA Sandy, the youngest of 4 siblings -2nd generation Americans on our mother's side. Yes, that's us in the center photo up top. I live in Mexico; you could say I went back to our roots. My mother Lu (Lupe) was one of the 1st of the Moreno-Hernandez family to be born in the USA, after her brothers Carlos (Charlie), Agustin (Auggie) and Gonzalo (Harry/Titi). Their oldest brother, Jesus (Jesse), was born in Mexico in 1918. Their parents were both from Mexico: Carlos Moreno Martinez in Villamar, Michoacán and Maria Hernandez del Rio, in Chavinda, Michoacán. The story of how or why my grandparents came to the USA may be forever lost, but we have a few pieces of the family tree puzzle put into place - like who I am, who you are, and with help form a few cousins, 80 year old letters and the ingenuity of the World Wide Web, I've been able to trace a handful of ancestors quite a few generations back. This blog is here for all of you - the Moreno, the Hernandez and the Moreno-Hernandez descendents- to walk this fascinating journey with me in search of our ancestors, step by step. I welcome you with open arms; I am glad you are here with me. Let's have some fun!
First, a little background on Mexican surnames, if you are not already familiar. First, women never lose their maiden names when they get married - which really helps us trace family roots! Second, everyone born in Mexico has 2 surnames. As my uncle Jesse was born in Mexico, let's take his name as an example: Jesus Moreno Hernandez, son of Carlos Moreno Martinez and Maria Hernandez del Rio. Now, take the first surname of each parent, and you've got it! Not only is it that simple - it also helps a great deal in finding family roots. We know that Carlos Moreno Martinez' mother was a Martinez, and Maria Hernandez del Rio's mother was a del Rio.
The entire Moreno-Hernandez family tree can be seen on the website below; it is constantly being updated by me, and I welcome updates/additions to it from you for ALL generations. Please, please, PLEASE add birthdays, children, grandchildren, photos, etc. You can do so by either downloading the program onto your computer, adding a comment on this blog or by emailing me the information.
Again, I am glad you are here - let's begin our journey!
